Kunitaro Organic Tea Estate is located on the Central Coast (Mangrove Mountain) approximately two hours north of Sydney. Established around 20 years ago, the tea estate benefits from a climate remarkably similar to that of Kagoshima, a renowned region in Japan known for its high-quality tea production.
Under the guidance of Mr. Akio-san, the estate follows traditional Japanese tea cultivation methods, utilizing authentic techniques, processes, and equipment. After the passing of the original owner, the estate has been expertly managed by Akio-san, who oversees the 10-hectare farm, including tea cultivation, processing, and distribution.
The estate primarily grows two key cultivars: Yabukita, which is used for producing Sencha, and Sayamakaori, which is used for crafting Matcha. Notably, the Sencha produced here is shaded for 21 days, which elevates it to a classification of Kabusecha. This additional shading imparts a rich, umami flavor profile that distinguishes it from regular Sencha, creating a tea that is both refreshing and complex. Tea is harvested only once a year, in October. If you're looking for a great day trip, visit Mr. Akio-san. He'll be delighted to show you around and offer a tea tasting experience.
