According to research, all types of tea come from the plant Camellia sinensis. However, claiming that China is the original homeland of tea is somewhat misleading. “Genetic studies of the Camellia sinensis plant suggest that the first tea plants originated from areas in northern Burma,” says American author Greg Rodgers. From the borders between India, China, and Burma, tea spread to the Yunnan region in China. “The first definitive mention of tea in a text comes from a work contract about 2,000 years ago,” explains Lawrence Zhang, a historian at the University of Hong Kong. “One of the tasks assigned to the servant in the contract was to go to the market and buy this plant for his master,” he explains.
